REACHING JAYWICK is a community project currently running in Jaywick, near Clacton on Sea Essex, with funding from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Program.  Starting in April 2010 the project will run for 3 ½ years. The CoastNet team hopes to tackle some of the challenges that people in Jaywick face by building on the resort’s strengths: it’s fabulous seaside location, superb sandy beaches and strong, spirited community.

Working with both residents and like-minded organisations we aim to improve the quality of life for local people by developing a community action plan as a tool for encouraging creative problem-solving and participation in building a sustainable future for Jaywick.

  1. We have tried in 2009/10 to get an program running to establish Living/work/possibilities. The action was set up by the Ceasin Foundation with backing of the EU commissioners relating to industrial/environment/ and housing. The Essex CC and TDC were both most obstructive in every way they could. We had the feeling that they did not mind keeping the community what actual was living in the holiday homes permanent, until such time new build accommodation was created to move them. However, the owners of the homes for holiday, were restricted in any form possible, so that many just left it, or disguised the ownership to avoid having to pay the full council tax for one or two weeks a year. Essex CC and TDC have wasted many millions in failing to act and to accept bringing Jaywick, mainly the Grasslands into the 21th century. Grasslands should have been allocated the status of Park Homes a long time ago. It would have solved their road problems and young children problems.

Brilliant ! I have recently written to Douglas Carswell, and he in turn he has asked Essex County Council to bring back the former name of “Jaywick Sands” on all signage and stationary, in order to encourage a pride in our coastal village, the name would evoke Sun and Sea, as opposed to “Jaywick ” which sounds like a cleansing fluid ! I believe this would go a long way to improving the image of our community.

I agree Angela, Jaywick Sands has a much nicer ring to it. Spread the word!!

Hi Angela, are you a member of the Jaywick Team or an individual living in Jaywick ? The latter i hope becuase you have come up with a great idea, you have started your train of thought at the begining to give you a good footing to progress.
Reading through all the flyers and pamphlets, paid teams should be taking note. In my opinion there are far too many branches to their tree at present. For a small deprived village we are not short of committees.
Well done Angela great idea keep them coming.

  5. David Baker says:

In a recent poll on Jaywick.net there was a 2 to 1 vote in favour of bringing back the name Jaywick Sands.

  6. Barbie says:

for the last few years, when asked my address I always say Jaywick Sands.
And Jaywick Sands would be alot nicer and better looking if all dog owners would keep their dogs on leads and pick up the dog mess. I live by the beach and watch dog owners let their dogs run riot on the beach, they don’t know where they have fouled. Also disgusted on the amount of dog mess on the promenade.

  7. Derek Smith says:

I just wish all the residents of Jaywick were invited in relation to any polls, most of us especially on the grasslands side hear very little until something has been done and then we are told we could have had a say. Too many people living outside of the Brooklands and Grasslands estate have a say in what our community needs and this needs to be changed. Having said that I agree with a renaming called Jaywick Sands and I think the Tudor estate should also be renamed so there is a clear distinctionbetween the two as Jaywick sands is treated as a money spinner for other areas and this also needs to be addressed.

  9. Ian, Brooklands resident. says:

well, its now in glorious summer here in Jaywick Sands,
the tourists are back with there tourists attitudes, but not all.
It would be so good to get the brooklands seafront road made either one way,
or by entry ONLY via the only legal adopted highways being, Lotus Way and Brooklands Gardens east, then turn right or left for your destination ONLY if you have residency of business in being here.
Leave the busses only on there circuler route as it works well,
    but please,
NOT two way traffic coming and going to the Park Resorts Holiday Camp.
(manager in silver audi take note!)
There is a highway built complete with speed limits that go 90% of the way to your place of employment, NOT mine!
I retired here, your visiting tourists did not.

the road was not designed to take the volume of traffic it now carries, nor is the road “adopted” resulting in no funding being available from ECC, TDC, nor the Highways Agency!
